The Malaysian Society of Soil Science (MSSS) is a non-government organization (NGO) in Malaysia set up to promote the study of soil science within the context of agriculture/forestry and to champion environmental stewardship. MSSS was founded on 2nd of April 1971 and this year marks its 51st anniversary. MSSS had a humble beginning where it was founded in 1971 by 26 members who were professionals in the area of soil science working in various government agencies at the time.
Since then, it has grown into a full-fledged professional entity and currently, MSSS has more than 1000 registered members since 1971 which include Honorary members, Fellow members, Life members, and Ordinary members. MSSS members comprise professionals working in various sectors within and outside of Malaysia including those in government agencies and the private sectors, as well as public citizens.
MSSS objectives are to promote the study of soil science and to create public awareness on the importance of soil conservation within the context of sustainable land management, to review areas of soil study relevant for national development, and to disburse small grants to needy students and to members attending scientific meetings related to soil. MSSS is actively involved in the Asian Soil Partnership (ASP) and East and Southeast Asia Federation of Soil Science Societies (ESAFS), apart from being a member of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS).
