The department is structured into 10 specialized divisions, one of which is the Fisheries Research Institute (FRI). FRI plays a pivotal role in generating and providing scientific and technical knowledge to support the development and advancement of fisheries and aquaculture at all levels.

VISION

To be the centre of excellence for

tropical fisheries research

MISSION

To provide sound scientific knowledge for the

sustainable development of the fisheries sector

NaFisH@DOF

The National Fish Health Research Center (NaFisH), is a centre under the fisheries research institute, located separately with the FRI main building. NaFisH was established on 1st April 2002 and play major roles in conducting R&D in fish health management in Malaysia. NaFisH received R&D allocations, mostly through the development fund under the Malaysia Plan (8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th) along with grants from MOSTI (IRPA, e-Science Fund) and international funds (JIRCAS). NaFisH is well equipped with 11 research laboratories managed under 2 main units:  microbiology & parasitology (bacteriology, virology, parasitology units) and diagnosis & disease control (epidemiology and limnology, pathology and molecule biology, vaccinology and immunology units).

Main Research Scope:

  1. Epidemiology of economically important fish diseases.
  2. Research in development of control and prevention strategies in aquatic animal health (AAH).
  3. Research in alternative treatment for control and prevention strategies of AAH.
