MASTER OF COMPARATIVE LAWS (MCL)
The postgraduate programme of the Kulliyyah of Laws is designed and embellished to address various burning issues pertaining to Islamic law, the influence of English Common Law and European Civil Law which is now so strong and widespread that it become indispensable for Muslims to understand these systems by rigorous study. A legal professional now required to be competent with their respective system around the world. The Kulliyyah preserves particular emphasis on comparative studies of the major legal systems of the world. Studying for an MCL at AlKOL equips students with the knowledge and skills needed in an increasingly competitive job market. MCL programme allows two modes: by coursework, and by research. The courses of MCL run for a full year containing two semesters, with an annual intake, starting in September and February. Courses are organized through lectures and seminars. Our small size classes stimulates the students to get involve in class discussions and lecturers to concentrate individual needs of students. Our diverse and international student body, many of whom already have professional experience, bring wide range of viewpoints to class discussions. Course forms part of the overall assessment for MCL degree and provides a way for students to measure their study progress throughout the year. In addition, all examinations are held in December and May, giving students an adequate time for examination
preparation.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D) IN LAWS
A PhD in laws programme is the most advanced form of postgraduate study and exclusively thesis-based. The candidates are required to prepare a viable ‘research proposal’ in accordance with the guidelines and format prescribed by the Faculty. It is awarded on the successful completion of a supervised research and assessed by a thesis and viva voce examination. AlKOL strives to promote research excellence among its entire academic staff. We recognized that – high-quality legal research may take many different forms, with a wide variety of legal research methods being employed in the numerous ongoing research projects. All PhD students are allocated with research supervisor (s) who will have the appropriate title and/ or methodological expertise to support the research project being undertaken. We offer supervision for research degrees in most subject areas of law, and also for interdisciplinary project which have legal aspect to them. Throughout the duration of study student will develop a strong working relationship with concern supervisors and they will provide ample assistance and support needed to undertake the research. The candidates may apply to write a thesis in Arabic subject to the availability of supervisor and examiner who are well-versed in both Arabic language and the subject-matter of the thesis..
