INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE SYMPOSIUM (ILS) 2024
26th – 27th November 2024
“Sustainable Language Teaching and Learning with the Rise of Artificial Intelligence: Current Challenges and Innovations”
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is becoming a common practice in institutions of higher learning. AI has been embraced in education in many parts of the world and is regarded as a tool to improve learning outcomes. The benefits of using AI in tertiary education are prevalent and “AI has the potential to provide personalized feedback to students, improve language proficiency, and increase student engagement. In addition, it can improve the quality of assessments, allowing for more objective evaluations of student learning outcomes” (Ayala-Pazmińo & Alvarado-Lucas, 2023, p. 685).
However, academic institutions are still wary about integrating AI into education. It is a huge concern among the academics that learning processes would be taken over by AI and academic integrity could be compromised. In light of the situation, the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia has been working on guidelines that serve as a direction to assist academics and students on the use of generative AI in education.
In Malaysia, the study of AI in language classrooms is still in its exploratory stage. Recognising the need to study this issue in depth, the Centre for Languages and Pre-university Academic Development (CELPAD), IIUM is organising an international symposium with the theme “Sustainable Language Teaching and Learning with the Rise of Artificial Intelligence: Current Challenges and Innovations”. The aim of this symposium is to provide a platform for all researchers and academics to share insights on the current trends, challenges and innovations of using AI in the language teaching and learning.
